More than five years after putting down the shield as Captain America in “Avengers: Endgame,” Chris Evans is now reportedly set to make his official return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
According to Deadline, Evans will appear in an unspecified role in “Avengers: Doomsday,” which is expected to hit theaters May 1, 2026.
Directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, “Avengers: Doomsday” will also mark the return of “Avengers” actors Benedict Cumberbatch, Anthony Mackie, and Robert Downey Jr., who will be playing the villainous Victor Von Doom instead of Iron Man.
Given Marvel’s forays into multiverse storytelling, it wouldn’t be surprising to see Evans return as some sort of alternate version of Steve Rogers, especially since Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson will still appear as the new Captain America, per Deadline.
While “Avengers: Doomsday” will be Evans’ “official” return to the MCU, the Sudbury native already broke the Marvel seal in 2024 during his cameo role in “Deadpool & Wolverine.” Instead of Captain America, however, Evans played Johnny Storm/the Human Torch, his first superhero role from the early 2000s.
Since retiring from the MCU, Evans has mostly favored quick cameos or high-budget action-adventure fare for streamers like Netflix (“The Gray Man”), Apple (“Ghosted”), and Amazon (“Red One”).
Beyond his turn in “Avengers: Doomsday,” Evans’ next big movie project is “Materialists,” an A24 romcom directed by Celine Song (“Past Lives”) and co-starring Pedro Pascal (who will also be in “Avengers: Doomsday” as Mr. Fantastic) and Dakota Johnson.
