Kristen Wiig hosted “Saturday Night Live” for the fifth time last night, joining the ranks of Drew Barrymore, John Mulaney, Woody Harrelson, Emma Stone, and many more. Too many more, some might say.
“Doesn’t this jacket have any meaning anymore?” Wiig lamented on stage during her monologue.
In fact, they’re just giving out these jackets now — celebs like Matt Damon, Fred Armisen, Ryan Gosling, and John Hamm all made cameos in the monologue wearing Five-Timers Club jackets, and none of them have hosted five times. Wiig does get her jacket at the end, though.
Wiig had something to promote last night, though she didn’t mention it — her new show, “Palm Royale,” is currently being released on Apple TV+. The comedy/drama takes place in 1969 and stars other celebs like Kaia Gerber, Carol Burnett, and Laura Dern.
Joining Wiig as musical guest this week was 26-year-old British singer-songwriter Raye, whose first album was released in 2023 to much acclaim, and won her Album of the Year at the 2024 BRIT awards — she performed a couple of songs off the album live last night.
Charles Barkley (Kenan Thompson), Ernie Johnson (James Austin Johnson), and Kenny Smith (Devon Walker) are recapping the March Madness tournament, and UConn has just beat Alabama in the semi-final. Barkley would rather be discussing politics on CNN. Smith isn’t super excited about this game, either, because the women’s tournament is “where the action’s at.” They cut to LSU women’s basketball coach Kim Mulky (Heidi Gardner), who has resting QAnon face, to find out how she trains her players.
Kristen Wiig joined the Five-Timers Club last night, and a ton of celebs appeared during her monologue to help ordain her. Former writer Paula Pell played an audience member, Paul Rudd asked if they’re doing one of those star-studded Five-Timers Club sketches, and Matt Damon, Fred Armisen, Jon Hamm, and Will Forte all have Five-Timers jackets even though none of them have hosted five times. “Lorne said the first time I hosted was so good it counted for three,” said Damon.
Wiig is meeting her boyfriend’s (Johnson) friends for the first time, and they want to play a new board game that Andrew Dismukes picked up at an estate sale. But Wiig doesn’t do board games — she’s afraid of getting Jumanjied. Arguments ensue about which version of Jumanji they’re talking about, and what the verb “Jumanjied” means. And when they open the game, “Ticket to Ride,” Will Forte lets them know they all have to build a railroad or they die — except Wiig.
In the trailer for this movie, “from the creator of ‘Saw X’ and the marketing director of Alo,” two women (Chloe Fineman and Molly Kearney) try pilates for the first time — and they can’t get out. The class is “so hard but so boring,” filled with eight gorgeous women and Kaia Gerber, and the instructor (Wiig) calls them names like ‘mamas’ and ‘girly pop.’ Chelsea doesn’t need any modifications, and she’s 11 months pregnant.
Gardner brings back her character Trudy, a doting executive assistant who’s “only right half the time.” So her boss hired another secretary (Wiig), and now they’re both always wrong. They do things like make bourbon “on the racks” and lick their boss’s tie clean. They both go to town on this one, falling through desks and walls (kind of), and everyone breaks at some point.
It’s that star-studded Five-Timers sketch. Jerry (Thompson) is retiring, and the office is throwing him a party. Characters come up in succession to say a few words, including the office improv troupe, Armisen, Damon, Wiig, and Forte, who’s the step-nephew of the event coordinator and notes that “death is in this room.”
Singer-songwriter Raye performed “Escapism.” and “Worth It,” both jazzy numbers that are off her 2023 album “21st Century Blues.”
Michael Che and Colin Jost joke about a few of the week’s biggest stories, like the UConn versus Iowa women’s college basketball game that had 14.2 million viewers, a toilet that leaked on a United Airlines flight, and the earthquake in New Jersey. The earthquake, played by Marcello Hernandez, actually came on to talk about things. Wiig also brought out her only recurring character of the night, Aunt Linda, to talk about her favorite movies of the year.
PBS is taking a look at an old French broadcasting program. It’s a ‘70s variety show, and lots of cast members get spotlights here, including Wiig — doing some of the physical comedy she’s known for.
