Watch: Maya Rudolph returns to ‘SNL’ to give new cast members some pointers in Breakfast Club-inspired monologue

“It makes me so happy to be here in the place that I love, I can’t tell you, especially after a year that has been, shall we say, a real kick in the clam."

It seems that actress and “Saturday Night Live” alum Maya Rudolph took Simple Minds’ “Don’t You (Forget About Me)” to heart when it came to remembering her time on the cast. The “Big Mouth” star began her monologue by reflecting on the past year, and then looking further back in her career to impart some advice on the show’s newcomers, Punkie Johnson, Andrew Dismukes, and Lauren Holt.

“It makes me so happy to be here in the place that I love, I can’t tell you, especially after a year that has been, shall we say, a real kick in the clam,” Rudolph starts off. “But it feels like we’re starting to see a light at the end of the tunnel. People are getting the vaccine. My parents got theirs; I’m really happy to report that.”

After calling the show’s “babies” to join her onstage, Rudolph reminisces that during her time, she was the shy one, whereas Rachel Dratch was the princess. “She was so perfect, with her red hair, and all her freckles, and she just did ‘Sixteen Candles’ so she had a lot of heat,” she recalled. Jimmy Fallon was the bad boy of the group, and the jock “was none other than Emilio Estevez.”

Sounding familiar, Johnson asked. “Are you talking about ‘The Breakfast Club’?” Noting that some of her memories are a little hazy, Rudolph ends by reassuring the newcomers that it’s going to be alright and pumps her fist in the air.

Rudolph, joined the cast of “Saturday Night Live” in 2000 and left in 2007, but has appeared in numerous sketches since. Recently, her most notable guest appearance is her reoccurring impersonation of Vice President Kamala Harris, who returned this episode to host a Seder with guests President Joe Biden (Alex Moffat) and Senator Ted Cruz (Aidy Bryant).
