Nick Jonas has clearly become the Justin Timberlake of the Jonas Brothers, surpassing the level of fame achieved by his siblings and settling into a tier of stardom where he can simultaneously host and serve as the musical guest for “Saturday Night Live.”

“SNL” tapping Jonas as host felt like a shrewd bit of cross-promotion for NBC, considering that Jonas is serving as a judge on this season of “The Voice. NBC made sure its audience wouldn’t forget it, running several commercials for the singing competition and commercials for Jonas appearing on “The Tonight Show” on Monday.

Fittingly, the episode had several music-based sketches, and Jonas spent his monologue singing a tune that tied into his previous stage experience in “Les Miserables.” Jonas was no one-trick pony, however, and proved capable of keeping up with the cast’s rapid-fire one-liners.

Who Gets A Vaccine Cold Open

For Massachusetts residents who have struggled to sign up for a COVID-19 vaccine over the last few weeks, the cold open of this week’s “Saturday Night Live” was very on-point.

The show opened with a fake game show hosted by Dr. Anthony Fauci (Kate McKinnon) called “So You Think You Can Get the Vaccine,” in which contestants present themselves to three governors — California’s Gavin Newsom (Alex Moffat), New York’s Andrew Cuomo (Pete Davidson) and Michigan’s Gretchen Whitmer (Cecily Strong) — as to why they should be given the vaccine.

“Getting the vaccine shouldn’t be a competition, but Americans will only want to get it if someone else can’t,” Fauci’s McKinnon said.

With his brother Kevin looking on in the audience, Jonas launched into modern version of “Drink with Me” from “Les Miserables,” a tune he sang in the musical’s 25th anniversary production on Broadway in 2010. This time, it was about the reasons to raise a glass during the pandemic era, from Zoom happy hours to sheer boredom.

Mirror Workout

Two bros (Chris Redd Mikey Day) buy a new workout mirror with two virtual trainers (Nick Jonas, Heidi Gardner) as well as Shannon Delgado (Kate McKinnon), a woman who is trapped in the mirror by a malevolent force.

Murder Show

When the men are away, the ladies will play. And by “play” we mean binge-watch endless hours of horrifying true-crime shows. (And maybe a true-crime podcast when that’s over.)

Cinderella’s Slipper

When Prince Charming (Jonas) comes to find his true love, the glass slipper doesn’t fit Cinderella (Chloe Fineman), it fits a foul-mouthed mouse (Aidy Bryant).

Bachelor Party

In another musical number, a bachelor party sings an ode to the everlasting bonds created by awkwardly sitting next to your friends (or future brother-in-law) for the stripper portion of the weekend.

Funny as he may be, Jonas is a musician first and foremost, and showed off his talent by performing his hits “Spaceman” and “This Is Heaven.”

Weekend Update

The Update desk handled the week’s headlines as usual, discussing everything from the recently approved stimulus package to the return of “Fraiser.” Additionally, anchors Colin Jost and Michael Che welcomed NBA superdad LaVar Ball (Kenan Thompson) and controversial Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (Cecily Strong).

Amusement Park

Ah, the joys of a middle school field trip to the amusement park: young love flourishing, thrilling rides leading to hand-holding and lap-sitting, and a fifth wheel (Kyle Mooney) who has to go on every ride with a life-sized doll of the guy from “Soul.”

Dionne Warwick Talk Show

In this recurring sketch, Ego Nwodim once again parodied the singer’s wacky Twitter persona, asking pointed but impossible-to-answer questions of her guests, including The Weeknd (Kenan Thompson), Dua Lipa (Melissa Villaseñor), and Jonas as himself.

Post-COVID Dating

Unlike most of Kate McKinnon’s late-night bar sketches, this one didn’t end in a furious make-out session with the host. This time, she and Jonas simply reacquainted themselves with the idea of dating in a post-COVID world.
