One of the highlights of the slate announced Wednesday is “Celebrity Substitute,” a fun twist on distance learning that partners a celebrity with a teacher to educate on a different each episode. Premiering May 7, early episodes include model Karlie Kloss teaching coding and actor Ken Jeong providing a biology lesson. Additional celebrities in future episodes include Bill Nye, Camila Mendes (“Riverdale”), Janelle Monáe (“Hidden Figures”), and Terry Crews (“Brooklyn Nine-Nine”).
Other new projects include “Create Together #WithMe,” a show hosted by actor Joseph Gordon-Levitt (“Inception”) that highlights everyday people collaborating remotely to make art; “Money Talks: Taxes,” an educational playlist from Refinery29 that offers timely financial advice about topics filing taxes and the COVID-19 stimulus check; and “Stay Home With: YUNGBLUD,” which follows the English singer-songwriter and his band as they adjust to creating music remotely.
Each of the YouTube Originals, which can be watched for free with ads on the video-sharing platform, will also encourage viewers to donate to coronavirus-related charitable organizations.
“YouTube’s greatest strength is its ability as a global platform to build community and connection among people from all walks of life,” said Susanne Daniels, global head of original content for YouTube. “We’re working to develop exciting new original content that is relevant, useful, and entertaining in order to deepen those connections and give people an outlet to come together.”
