The nominations for the 2020 Golden Globes were announced Monday morning, and while a few films with local ties landed major nominations, others missed out.
Actors Tim Allen (“Toy Story”), Dakota Fanning (“War of the Worlds”), and Susan Kelechi Watson (“A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood”) announced the nominations for the awards, which will air at 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 5, on NBC. The event will be hosted by Ricky Gervais (creator of the UK version of “The Office”).
“Knives Out,” a modern whodunnit directed by Rian Johnson and filmed in Massachusetts last year, scored three nominations, including Best Picture — Musical or Comedy. While Sudbury native Chris Evans didn’t land a nomination for his performance, his co-stars Daniel Craig (star of the James Bond franchise) and Ana de Armas (“Blade Runner 2049”) earned nods for Best Actor — Musical or Comedy and Best Actress — Musical or Comedy, respectively.
Also up for Best Actress — Musical or Comedy is Emma Thompson for her role in “Late Night,” which co-stars Cambridge native Mindy Kaling, who also wrote and produced the film.
“Little Women,” which was filmed in Massachusetts in 2018 and 2019, landed nominations for Best Original Score and Best Actress in a Motion Picture — Drama for Saoirse Ronan (“Lady Bird”). Greta Gerwig was a notable snub from the Best Director category (which featured no women nominees), and Laura Dern was nominated for her role in “Marriage Story” instead.
Also missing the cut was Matt Damon for his performance as Carroll Shelby in “Ford v Ferrari.” The sole nomination for the James Mangold (“Walk the Line”) racing drama went to Christian Bale for Best Actor — Drama.
Missing out entirely was “Uncut Gems,” which held its regional premiere in Boston on Sunday with Manchester, N.H., resident Adam Sandler, directors (and Boston University alums) Josh and Benny Safdie, composer (and Wayland native) Daniel Lopatin, and Celtics great Kevin Garnett in attendance. While the film wasn’t an odds-on favorite to land multiple nominations, the buzz around Sandler’s performance as jeweler Howard Ratner had received significant awards buzz.
On the television side of things, Apple TV Plus flagship series “The Morning Show” landed three nominations despite middling reviews from critics. The show earned a Best Drama nod, along with Best Actress nominations for Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon. Acton native Steve Carell, the third star of the show, was left out of the fun, however.
