“Bertucci’s: Horny For Family?”
That was the new slogan bestowed upon the regional Italian chain restaurant by “Saturday Night Live” over the weekend during a bizarre but ultimately heartfelt sketch that brought new meaning to the phrase “pizza lover.”
Titled “Pizza Ad,” the sketch centers around a family of four Bertucci’s super-fans who win a contest to film a commercial for the company. After the family’s mom (Kate McKinnon) makes a joke about being “all horned up for this pizza” that earns her embarrassed rebukes from her teenage kids (Kyle Mooney, Heidi Gardner) and husband (host Will Ferrell), she sulks during filming, quickly derailing the commercial.
“How can I eat ’em if I’m supposed to keep my mouth shut?” McKinnon asks, after being prompted to try the garlic knots by the commercial’s director (Mikey Day). “Just give me the crust from the trash. Whatever the raccoons don’t want.”
As her kids half-heartedly try to apologize for making fun of her all day (“Just because everything you say is weird and bad”), she walks off set. But with mom gone, it becomes clear that she’s the rock of the family, and filming completely falls apart without her.
“She is the greatest woman in the world,” Ferrell says between sobs. “She let me believe in Santa Claus until I was 28 years old.”
Once mom returns, everyone is so relieved that they decide to use her joking idea, hence the slogan, “Bertucci’s: Horny For Family.”
According to a spokesperson for the company, the company had no idea about the sketch beforehand, but owner Robert Earl was “so happy to see the love for Bertucci’s in the national spotlight.”
