During an interview with Entertainment Tonight about his upcoming film “Light of My Life,” Affleck discussed Matt and Ben’s upcoming project “The Last Duel,” a medieval revenge thriller that will mark the first time the pair have written a movie together since “Good Will Hunting.”
Casey acknowledged how good of a pair Matt and Ben make in movies, saying that because of Matt and Ben’s real-life friendship, “something about that translates to the screen.” But he jokingly expressed doubt that “The Last Duel” would properly capture the onscreen chemistry the duo shared in “Good Will Hunting.”
“They’ll be playing medieval knights of some sort, so I’m not sure that’s going to work,” he said with a laugh. “But yeah … they’ll be on screen together and it’ll be lovely.”
Based on a 2004 novel by Eric Jager inspired by true events, “The Last Duel” is about a 14th century French knight named Jean de Carrouges and a squire named Jacques Le Gris who are friends. When de Carrouges returns from war, his wife, Marguerite, says that Le Gris raped her. Eventually, the two are ordered to duel to the death in a trial by combat to resolve the issue.
According to Deadline, Damon and Affleck will co-write the script with Nicole Holofcener, who earned an Oscar nomination for her script for 2018’s “Can You Ever Forgive Me?,” and the film will be directed by Ridley Scott (“Alien,” “Gladiator,” “The Martian”).
When asked by ET if he would consider joining the duo in “The Last Duel,” Affleck demurred.
“Like pig farmer number 3?” Affleck said. “No. I don’t know. I don’t think so.”
