Mindy Kaling says you can’t use ‘Game of Thrones’ as an excuse to not see her new movie
"Last season of 'Game of Thrones' will be done by then, so you have no reason not to see it."
Almost exactly a year after her “Ocean’s 8” hit theaters, Cambridge native Mindy Kaling will be back in multiplexes.
Coming off of a successful debut at the 2019 Sundance Film Festival, Kaling’s new film “Late Night” will hit theaters nationwide on June 7.
“Hi, guys, I have some major news,” Kaling said in a video posted to her Instagram. “My movie ‘Late Night’ is going to premiere in theaters June 7. Last season of ‘Game of Thrones’ will be done by then, so you have no reason not to see it.”

“Late Night,” which Kaling wrote, produced, and stars in, centers around a veteran late-night host (Emma Thompson) facing declining ratings whose daily routine is shaken up by a “diversity hire” in the writer’s room (Kaling).
Amazon purchased the domestic distribution rights to “Late Night” in January for what was at the time a Sundance record of $13 million. (That sum was later eclipsed at the festival when Amazon paid $14 million for “The Report” and Warner Bros. paid $15 million for “Blinded by the Light.”)
Buzz for the film coming out of Sundance was generally positive. Indiewire’s Kate Erbland called the film “funny as hell,” and Variety’s Peter Debruge named it one of the best films of the festival, describing it as a “smart and satisfying comedy” that “savvily addresses so many of the issues swirling in the zeitgeist today.”
