The stars of “A Star Is Born,” Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper, brought the house down with a performance of “Shallow” at the 2019 Oscars. With no announcement, Academy crew members wheeled a piano from backstage, at which point Cooper and Gaga rose from their seats, walked onstage, and immediately began the soulful duet, staring into each other’s eyes.

“Shallow” came into the night as a strong favorite to land the Oscar in the Best Original Song category, and it didn’t disappoint. The tune completed an impressive stretch of award show victories, following its wins for Best Original Song at the Golden Globes, as well as Best Song Written for Visual Media and Best Pop Duo/Group Performance at the Grammys.
Gaga co-wrote the song with Mark Ronson, Andrew Wyatt, and Connecticut native Anthony Rossomando, who spent many years in the Boston music scene as a guitarist for garage rock band The Damn Personals.
After thanking Cooper and her co-writers in her speech, Gaga shared a message to aspiring musicians watching the telecast.
“If you are at home, and you’re sitting on your couch, and you are watching this right now, all I have to say is that this is hard work,” Gaga said. “I’ve worked hard for a long time, and it’s not about, you know, it’s not about winning. But what it’s about is not giving up. If you have a dream, fight for it. There’s a discipline for passion. And it’s not about how many times you get rejected or you fall down or you’re beaten up. it’s about how many times you stand up and are brave and you keep on going.”
