Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, and Maya Rudolph weren’t hosting the Oscars on Sunday night, but they gave audiences a peek of what that might look like during a presentation of the Best Supporting Actress award that functioned as a shortened version of the traditional opening monologue.
“We are not your hosts,” Fey said, “but we’re going to stand here a little too long so that the people who get USA Today tomorrow will think that we hosted.”
Rudolph kept the “we’re not hosting” vibe going, while also including a mention of politics.
“So just a quick update for everybody in case you’re confused,” Rudolph added. “There is no host tonight, there won’t be a Popular Movie category, and Mexico is not paying for the wall.”
Poehler, meanwhile, made light of the Academy’s original plan to air some awards during commercial breaks.
“That’s right, and we won’t be doing awards during the commercials, but we will be presenting commercials during the awards,” Poehler said. “So if all the winners could please say, ‘Hellmann’s Mayonnaise: We’re on the side of food,’ instead of your speeches, that would be great.”
Fey, Poehler, and Rudolph also riffed on what it would have been like serving as hosts by throwing out a rapid-fire series of riffs and one-liners about “A Star Is Born,” Fyre Festival, and “Black Panther,” among other topics.
“Hey, Chadwick Boseman,” Rudolph said, addressing the “Black Panther” actor. “Wakanda plans you got later?”
