A New Hampshire man proposed — sort of — on reality show ‘The Proposal’
Apparently a Cape Cod trip can really sweep a woman off her feet.
Each week on ABC’s “The Proposal” — hosted by University of Florida and NFL quarterback and former “Bachelor” Jesse Palmer — 10 women or men compete for the opportunity to participate in a proposal with someone they literally just met. The reality show is part “The Dating Game,” part beauty pageant, part super awkward family dinner: During the hour-long episode, a suitor or “suitress,” as the show’s website calls her, narrows down his or her number of potential life partners, all while inside a “pod” that keeps him or her hidden. Contestants show off their “finest beachwear,” answer “deal breaker questions,” and meet a family member of the suitor. Then, the remaining two candidates are supposed to propose (or, in the case of the women, talk about love, then wait for the man to choose and propose to one).On Monday’s episode, Latoya Blakely, 33, a Dallas attorney, accepted the proposal of solar energy specialist Tyler MacKay, 26, who hails from Bedford, New Hampshire, according to the New Hampshire Union Leader. But there was a twist: “I came on this show today, you know, thinking I could leave here with a potential life partner, so…,” MacKay said as he got down on one knee and opened a black ring box revealing an engagement ring. “A very special place to me is Cape Cod, so I am proposing that you come with me to Cape Cod, meet my family. At that point, if you love my family and your family gives me the blessing, then, you know, I’d love to get married to you with this ring.”That’s right: MacKay proposed a vacation, not a marriage. And after hearing runner-up Garland Brown’s marriage proposal to live “happily ever after,” Blakely decided she was “going to have to go to Cape Cod.”
