Alexandra Ocasio-Cortez’s shocking Democratic congressional primary win in New York over a longtime incumbent received nationwide attention this week, including from President Donald Trump.

Trump tweeted that U.S. Representative Joe Crowley, whom Ocasio-Cortez beat by 15 percentage points, “should have been nicer, and more respectful, to his President!”

When Ocasio-Cortez appeared on “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” on Thursday, the community activist and Boston University alum had a message for the commander-in-chief.

In response to Trump’s tweet, Colbert asked Ocasio-Cortez, “Are you going to be nicer to the president?”

“You know, the president is from Queens,” Ocasio-Cortez, 28, said. “And with all due respect — half of my district is from Queens — I don’t think he knows how to deal with a girl from the Bronx.”

Ocasio-Cortez, who identifies politically as a Democratic Socialist, also explained to Colbert how she defines that term.

“So what that means to me is health care as a human right,” Ocasio-Cortez said. “It means that every child, no matter where you are born, should have access to a college or trade-school education, if they so choose it. And I think that no person should be homeless, if we can have public structures and public policy to allow for people to have homes and food and lead a dignified life in the United States.”

“Well, those all seem like very worthy goals,” Colbert replied. “You may get a little resistance from Donald Trump.”
