The first trailer for “Beautiful Boy” hit YouTube Wednesday. It shows early glimpses of the true story of a father trying to help his drug-addicted teenage son get clean.
In the 2005 New York Times Magazine article “My Addicted Son” and subsequently in a memoir also titled “Beautiful Boy,” David Sheff told his story of trying to save his son Nic Sheff. The book details harrowing, confrontational conversations that David had with Nic as Nic repeated the cycle of getting clean and then re-addicted to methamphetamine. Nic also told his story in two memoirs.
“There are moments that I look at him, this kid that I raised, who I thought I knew inside and out, and I wonder who he is,” David (played by Acton native Steve Carell) says in a voiceover in the film trailer.
In another scene, Nic (Timothee Chalamet, “Call Me by Your Name”) articulates his self-loathing.
“I don’t feel like I have a disease,” he yells. “This isn’t like cancer. This is my choice. I put myself here.”
Much like Carell’s performance in the upcoming “Welcome to Marwen,” his role in “Beautiful Boy” is getting early awards season buzz. Both Awards Watch and IndieWire list “Beautiful Boy” as a candidate for a Best Picture Oscar nomination, Carell as a candidate for a Best Actor nod, and Chalamet as one of the leading candidates to score a Best Supporting Actor nomination.
Co-starring Amy Ryan (“Gone Baby Gone”) as David’s ex-wife and Nic’s mother, and Boston native Maura Tierney (“The Affair,” “ER”) as David’s second wife, “Beautiful Boy” will hit theaters Oct. 12.
