During Sunday’s edition of “Last Week Tonight,” host John Oliver took aim at the NRA, specifically NRATV, the gun lobby organization’s free online content channel that is available on streaming devices like Apple TV, Roku, and Amazon Fire TV.
Oliver lampooned many of NRATV’s shows, including “Love at First Shot,” a show produced by NRATV’s sub-brand NRA Women that features gun experts showing women who have never shot guns before how to do so. In one scene, an instructor describes the feeling of shooting an AR-15 assault rifle, the gun used in many deadly mass shootings, as a “light poof of happiness.”
“A light poof of happiness?” Oliver said. “It’s a little weird to describe a semi-automatic rifle the way Bob Ross describes a f****** cloud.”
Toward the end of the segment, Oliver said that focusing on NRATV might actually be an ineffective way to oppose the organization.
“Think about it this way: If the NRA is a ferocious bear charging at you, NRATV is that bear’s ridiculous hat,” Oliver said. “Is it eye-catching? Sure it is. Is it perversely entertaining? Absolutely. Is it the main thing you should be worried about? Probably not. Because the real truth here is, hat or no hat, it is imperative that everyone keep their eyes on that f****** bear.”
