Stephen Colbert applauds Florida school shooting survivors: ‘The adults aren’t cutting it anymore’

“The Late Show” was in the midst of reruns last week when the horrific shooting occurred at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. Returning from his brief hiatus, host Stephen Colbert addressed the activism of the Stoneman Douglas students, who have organized marches in the wake of the Feb. 14 tragedy that left 17 dead.
“There is one group that does give me hope that we will do something to protect the children,” Colbert said on Tuesday’s episode. “And sadly, it’s the children.”
On Tuesday, dozens of Stoneman Douglas students traveled to the Florida state house in Tallahassee to watch as legislators rejected a ban on certain semiautomatic guns and large capacity magazines. Despite the setback, Colbert encouraged them not to lose hope.
“I hope these kids don’t give up, because this is their lives and their future,” Colbert said. “Somebody else may be in power, but this country belongs to them.
“And there is reason for hope,” Colbert continued. “Look at the Me Too movement. A lot of men in power did not see that coming. But it proved that change can happen overnight. And this is an election year, so if you want to see change, you have to go to the polls and tell the people who will not protect you that their time is up.”
