Jenny Slate is known for her work in film and television, but as a high schooler at Milton Academy, she did another type of performing: a cappella.
Slate stopped by The Late Late Show with James Corden on Monday to talk about her new film Landline, and shared how joining an a cappella group in high school transformed her from a friendless dork to a singing dork with friends.
“At my high school, a cappella—believe it or not—was cool,” Slate said. “I did not have any friends, and then I got into the a cappella group, and suddenly I got to go to parties, I had a boyfriend, we were Frenching, second base, you know what I mean?”
Slate, who was also the valedictorian at Milton her senior year, then showed Corden, Anna Faris (Scary Movie, Mom), and Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker in the Star Wars films) the very specific way a cappella groups dance.
“You’re in a semicircle with other dorks,” Slate said. “Everyone’s like, ‘Boom ba dah dah,’ and everyone looks at each other like, ‘Isn’t this the best song?'”
