John Oliver discusses how little we actually know about Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner

John Oliver said Trump “can’t even get nepotism right” with his daughter Ivanka and son-in-law, Jared Kushner.

In a segment on Sunday’s episode of Last Week Tonight, Oliver delved into the White House roles of Ivanka and Kushner, who both recently accepted positions in the Trump administration.

Oliver started off by showing a bulleted list of Kushner’s reported responsibilities, including brokering peace in the Middle East, reforming veteran care, and revamping the federal government.

“It is not unusual for powerful men to give their son-in-laws do-nothing jobs,” Oliver said, “but leave it to Donald Trump, who can’t even get nepotism right, to give his a do-everything job.”

Oliver then talked about how little information we have about both Ivanka’s and Kushner’s qualifications and stances on political issues. Oliver called Kushner “creepily silent” and said that little evidence supports the assumption that he is highly intelligent. Oliver said that Ivanka is intentionally vague when she’s asked about the policies on which she and her father disagree, leading many to brand her as a moderating influence on the president.

“I don’t know enough about them to eviscerate them, just as you don’t know enough about them to justify putting any real hopes in them.” Oliver said. “Because it is dangerous to think of them as a moderating influence, as reassuring as that may feel, because believe me—and it gives me no pleasure to say this—if they are the reason you are sleeping at night, you should probably still be awake.”
