Here’s the Mitt Romney quote that made it into the upcoming season of ‘Veep’
When the writers behind ‘Veep’ wanted to understand what it’s like to lose a presidential election, they knew exactly who to consult: former Mass. governor and failed 2012 presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
During a visit to Jimmy Kimmel’s late night show last week, Veep star Julia Louis-Dreyfus discussed the sixth season of the HBO political satire, which premiered on Sunday. In the show’s latest installment (spoiler alert), former President Selina Meyer, played by Louis-Dreyfus, must adjust to life outside the Oval Office after she fails to win re-election.
Luckily, the writers were able to turn to Romney, an expert on the subject who also happens to be a fan of the Emmy-winning comedy.
“[Romney and his wife, Ann] came and talked to us at great length and it was really useful because we really wanted to talk to him about what it’s like to lose,” Louis-Dreyfus said.
Louis-Dreyfus said she asked him about the controversial “47 percent moment,” when he landed in hot water after a leaked video of him alleging that 47 percent of Americans don’t pay income taxes went viral. She liked his response so much that it made it into Veep’s upcoming season.
“‘The truth is, when you’re running, if you’re explaining, you’re losing,'” she said, quoting Romney. “And I thought, ‘That’s such a great expression.’ Anyway, we put it in the show.”
Kimmel then suggested Louis-Dreyfus should give Romney one of her Emmy’s: “You’ve got too many of them anyway,” he joked.
