John Oliver has a new name for the Trump administration’s various controversies during the president’s first six weeks in office: “Stupid Watergate.”
The HBO host started Sunday’s episode of Last Week Tonight by playing clips from several current and former Trump confidantes struggling to distance themselves from Russia, including former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort, former Trump foreign policy adviser Carter Page, and attorney general Jeff Sessions, who on Thursday recused himself from any future investigation into Russian meddling with the 2016 election.
“It is not clear what is really going on here yet,” Oliver said. “Although one possibility is this all amounts to what I call ‘Stupid Watergate,’ a potential scandal with all the intrigue of Watergate, except everyone involved is really bad at everything.”
Oliver then discussed Trump’s tweeted accusation that former President Barack Obama wiretapped his phones, something for which he has provided no evidence.
“The relevant question isn’t so much, ‘What did the president know and when did he know it,’” Oliver said, “as it is, ‘Is the president physically capable of knowing things at all?’”
