Jimmy Kimmel reveals what his final Matt Damon joke was going to be if not for the Best Picture mishap
The Oscars host was going to take one more chance to mock his frenemy.
Until the gigantic Best Picture flub at the end of the 89th Academy Awards, Jimmy Kimmel’s Oscars hosting job was basically one long Matt Damon roast. As it turns out, if things hadn’t gone so wrong with the final award, the grand finale would have been yet another joke at the Cambridge native’s expense.
While Kimmel noted on his own show Monday night that he was sitting in the audience with Damon when the chaos began, he didn’t mention what the duo had planned. But in an appearance on Bill Simmons’s podcast released late Wednesday night, Kimmel revealed the details of the abandoned gag.
“The plan for the last joke was — the best picture winner is announced, they make a speech, [and] I was assuming the best picture was not going to be Manchester by the Sea,” Kimmel said. “I said to Matt, if it’s not Manchester by the Sea, I’m going to be sitting next to you — this would be my revenge for the Emmys, because at the Emmys, he walked onstage after we lost our category.
“I’d be sitting next to him and it would start on me,” Kimmel continued. “I’d start wrapping the show up, but then the camera would widen and we’d see that Matt was sitting next to me. And I would say, ‘Wow it’s unbelievable, you know, Casey [Affleck] won and Kenneth [Lonergan] won. There’s only one person who didn’t win tonight [for Manchester by the Sea], and it’s you. It would have been a nice little button to the whole night.”
Thanks to the wrong envelope ending up in Warren Beatty’s hands, that never happened. But somehow we doubt that this is the end of the duo’s “feud.”
