Natalie Portman stopped by Jimmy Kimmel Live! Monday to talk about her role as Jacqueline Kennedy in Jackie and how she’s dealing with being pregnant while on the awards circuit.
The last time the Harvard grad won an Academy Award (for 2010’s Black Swan), she was pregnant with her first child. She reportedly isn’t due until spring, but Kimmel, as host of this year’s Oscars, said he was ready for anything.
“Of course, we don’t want this to happen,” Kimmel said, “but if you should go into labor during the Oscar broadcast, I want you to know that as host, I am prepared to deliver the child.”
“Fantastic, thank you,” Portman replied, shaking the host’s hand. “Television history.”
Kimmel, whose wife is also currently expecting, chatted with Portman about her eating habits, mentioning that the scene at his house resembles Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest. The actress revealed that her strategy is to eat as if wherever she’s going won’t have food.
“I feel like I get a little panicky about food availability,” Portman said. “If I’m going somewhere, I’m like, ‘Will they have something that I will want to eat at that point?’ Before I go anywhere, I’ll have a plate of pancakes or a veggie burger or whatever. You know, just to be prepared.”
The actress also said that she’s not the best at impressions, so when she prepared for her role in Jackie, she relied more on putting herself into the former first lady’s mindset rather than solely focusing on Kennedy’s well-known accent and appearance.
“My understanding of how to get into a character is always through their emotions,” Portman said. “What you understand about their story, what they might be thinking or feeling. And of course, for this part, I worked on the voice and the dialect and everything because it’s a very specific accent. But still, the emotional side is what leads.”
