‘Manchester by the Sea’ goes 0-4 at SAG Awards

Here's why that's especially not good news for Casey Affleck.

Manchester by the Sea

was shut out at the 23rd annual Screen Actors Guild Awards Sunday night, failing to win any of the four awards for which it was nominated.

Casey Affleck, Lucas Hedges, and Michelle Williams missed out on Outstanding Performances by a Male Actor in a Lead Role, Female Actor in a Supporting Role, and Male Actor in a Supporting Role, respectively. Those awards went to Denzel Washington (Fences), Viola Davis (Fences), and Mahershala Ali (Moonlight).

Manchester by the Sea also lost in the Best Performance by a Cast category to Hidden Figures.

Manchester‘s 0-4 night doesn’t bode well for the Affleck, Hedges, and Williams at the Academy Awards on Feb. 26. According to awards prediction site Gold Derby, in the 22 years that the Screen Actors Guild has given awards, 64 of the 88 winners in the individual acting categories have won an Academy Award. Unfortunately for Affleck — who has been seen by prognosticators as the likeliest of the three actors to win an Oscar — the strongest correlation between the SAGs and Oscars has historically been the Best Actor category: The Academy has mirrored the SAG’s pick 18 out of 22 times.
