It’s a question that’s been asked time and time again: Who has the best on-screen Boston accent?

The Boston Globe‘s Ty Burr tackled local accents last year, citing standouts like Robert Mitchum’s in The Friends of Eddie Coyle, Amy Ryan’s in Gone Baby Gone, and Michael Keaton’s in Spotlight. According to Bill Simmons, Matt Damon’s in Good Will Hunting is king. But when People recently asked Ben Affleck the same question in an interview, he was quick to dismiss his Good Will Hunting co-star.

“Mine, in Good Will Hunting,” Affleck jokingly said. “Way better than Matt’s.

“I can’t believe he singled out Matt Damon’s as better than mine,” Affleck continued, referring to Simmons’s choice. “Did he see the movie? He’s older. He’s losing it.”

Later in the interview, Affleck seemed to change his mind, nominating his brother, Casey Affleck, noting his accent in Manchester by the Sea. (Burr also gave the younger Affleck praise for his Boston accent proficiency, writing that Affleck, “…unlike his brother, seems to remember what he once sounded like…”)

Affleck told People he was so proud of his younger brother for getting awards recognition for his role in Manchester.

“It’s just so exciting to see a guy who I always knew was so talented — I put him in my first movie as the lead, I knew what he could do,” Affleck said. “To see him get the opportunity to stretch and play that range and do all those interesting things with that character is, I feel like, I don’t know, it just makes me happy.”
