Despite a 23-year age difference, Mark Wahlberg and Justin Bieber have a lot in common. Both started their careers in music, both are slightly shorter than you would probably expect, and, of course, both served as underwear models for Calvin Klein.

When Wahlberg stopped by Conan on Thursday to promote Patriots Day, which opens nationwide on Friday, the Dorchester native offered a defense of the troubled pop star, claiming that he was even more of a punk when he was Bieber’s age.

O’Brien kicked off the segment by showing a side-by-side of the two stars’ Calvin Klein photos.

“I had that gig briefly,” O’Brien joked. “For three months.”

When O’Brien asked about the pair’s relationship, Wahlberg shared an amusing anecdote.

“He’s a very nice young man. He’s a friend of mine. I’ve spent time with him,” Wahlberg said. “He did send me the pictures. I was like, ‘You don’t send a guy pictures like this.'”

Wahlberg then defended Bieber, who is only 22 years old, saying he’s a cordial young man compared to what Wahlberg was like at that age.

“People give him flak for growing up in the spotlight, and they say he has a bit of an attitude,” Wahlberg said. “But you look at the look on my face [in the Calvin Klein ad]. I mean, I was the biggest punk in the world. He’s very nice, young, and polite compared to what I was.”
