James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke segments have become a hit since their debut on The Late Late Show in 2015, featuring guests like Madonna, Michelle Obama, Bruno Mars, and Lady Gaga. But according to the late-night host, none of them would have been possible without singer George Michael, who passed away on December 25 at the age of 53.

“I feel like I’ve loved George Michael as long as I’ve kind of loved music, in a way, and I know so many of his fans feel the same,” Corden said on the Tuesday episode of his show. “Like sometimes, I can remember so many specific times in my life where I might have felt on my own, and George’s music would feel like he just… It would feel like you would listen to a song and he would reach his hand out and tell you that you weren’t on your own and that these feelings were not particular to you.”

Back in 2011, when Corden still lived in the U.K., he teamed up with Michael for a skit for Red Nose Day, a major fundraising event hosted by Comic Relief and broadcast live on BBC, that featured the two of them singing in a vehicle. When Corden came to the U.S., he showed Michael’s performance to unsure celebrities to prove how fun a Carpool Karaoke segment would be.

“We went to Mariah Carey, and she was the first person to say yes,” Corden said, referring to Carey’s March 2015 appearance. “Her words were, ‘If it’s good enough for George, then it’s good enough for me. I’ll do it.'”
