On Monday, Vice President Joe Biden told reporters in his plainspoken style of his future plans once he leaves office.

“I’m going to run in 2020. For president,” Biden said. “So, uh, what the hell, man.”

During an appearance on Tuesday night’s episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Biden walked back his comments a bit, but still didn’t completely rule out a 2020 bid.

“I don’t plan on running again,” Biden said. “But to say you know what’s going to happen in four years, I just think is not rational.”

“That is the sound of a door creaking open,” Colbert joked.

“I can’t see the circumstance in which I’d run,” Biden said. “But what I’ve learned a long, long time ago, Stephen, is to never say never.”

Biden also expressed a twinge of regret for not seeking the presidency in 2016, saying that the decision was right for his family, even though he was “best prepared at this moment to lead the country.”

He told Colbert: “The issues that are of greatest concern were in my wheelhouse, things that I have dealt with my whole career. So in that sense, I’m disappointed I’m not going to be in a position to make those decisions. But I don’t regret the actual decision.”
