Stephen Colbert lashes out at ‘D-bag’ Donald Trump for attacking fallen soldier’s family

The CBS host swears that ‘D-bag’ doesn’t stand for what you think it stands for, though.

John Oliver isn’t the only late-night host criticizing Donald Trump for his comments about Khizr Khan, the father of a Muslim American soldier killed in Iraq who went after Trump in a speech at the DNC. On Monday’s episode of The Late Show, CBS host Stephen Colbert joined his former Comedy Central compatriot in attacking Trump, calling the Republican presidential candidate a ‘D-bag’ — though Colbert made clear that that abbreviation doesn’t exactly mean what you might think (more on that in a second).

Colbert addressed the controversy during another edition of “The Werd” — a segment he was careful to stress last week to corporate lawyers is completely different from “The Word,” a popular segment on his former Comedy Central show.

Colbert first went after Trump for saying that Khan’s wife, Ghazala, “probably, maybe wasn’t allowed to have anything to say.”

“Yes, Trump knows a good husband allows his wife to say something,” Colbert said, as the screen to his right displayed the unsaid punchline, “… That Michelle Obama Already Said.”

Colbert then followed up by going after Trump’s tweet from Monday morning, which said, “Mr. Khan, who does not know me, viciously attacked me from the stage of the DNC and is now all over T.V. doing the same – Nice!”

“How could you possibly judge a presidential candidate unless you’ve met them?” Colbert said. “Well, I’ve met Donald Trump, so I’m on solid ground when I say: Donald, you’re being a dad-bag.”

“Which again, due to space, we’ve had to shorten,” Colbert continued, as the word ‘D-Bag’ flashed on the screen next to him.

“The Werd” was just one segment in which Colbert went after Trump on Monday’s show. The host also sported a neck brace to symbolize the whiplash Trump’s contradictory statements gave him, had a conversation with a cartoon Donald Trump on why he doesn’t want to hold debates during a football game, and ran a faux-experiment to see if Trump would tweet in response to criticism from a sweet old lady, a kindergartener, and a kitten.
