‘Hamilton’ makes history with 16 Tony Award nominations
Boston-born 'Waitress' receives four.
Big day out of New York City this morning: Actress Nikki M. James and actor Andrew Rannells announced the 2016 Tony Award nominations at the Beacon Theatre, and Broadway’s huge hit of a musical, Hamilton, walked away with a record-setting 16 noms. Creator Lin-Manuel Miranda was nominated for Book, Score, and Lead Actor in a Musical.
Hamilton made history, beating out previous record holders for musical productions with the most Tony nominations: 2001’s The Producers and 2009’s Billy Elliot, the Musical (both with 15). While Hamilton is sold out on Broadway in New York for months out, the tour of Hamilton is coming to Boston in 2018.
Waitress, which began at Harvard University’s American Repertory Theater, scored four nominations this year. The musical is based on the 2007 movie, with music and lyrics written by singer/songwriter Sara Bareilles.
The 70th annual Tony Awards will air June 12 at 8 p.m. on CBS.
