Lady Gaga gave a powerful performance of her Oscar-nominated song “Til It Happens to You,’’ an anthem detailing the emotional trauma of sexual assault, at the 88th annual Academy Awards on Sunday evening.

Though Gaga’s song, from the documentary The Hunting Ground, did not win the Oscar for Best Original Song, her performance featured a powerful conclusion as she was joined on stage by sexual assault survivors who had messages painted on their arms.

Gaga’s performance was preceded by an introduction from Vice President Joe Biden, who urged audience members to take a pledge at ItsOnUs.org to help end sexual assault and to “intervene in situations where consent cannot or has not been given.’’
