Mayor Walsh honors the Godmother of Punk, declares October 10 ‘Patti Smith Day’

The punk legend will be in town to discuss her new memoir, M Train.

Boston has already seen Godsmack Day, Guster Day, and Riot Grrrl Day. Now Marty Walsh is celebrating the Punk Poet Laureate by declaring October 10 Patti Smith Day in Boston.

Walsh’s proclamation details Smith’s contributions to the world of rock, poetry, and art and explains her local significance as well.

“Ms. Smith has earned the love of Bostonians beginning with her earliest Boston shows at The Jazz Workshop/Paul’s Mall in 1976 to her most recent headlining of the City of Boston’s 2014 New Year’s Eve First Night Celebration,’’ it reads.

So how does one celebrate the legendary Rock and Roll Hall of Famer on Patti Smith Day?

Smith will appear at the Back Bay Events Center on Saturday, where she’ll discuss and sign copies of her new memoir, M Train. But if you can’t make it to that event, listening to her music would be a good start.
