Massachusetts is entering the next phase of the pandemic this weekend after more than a year marked by death and uncertainty.
Last week, Gov. Charlie Baker announced that on May 29 his administration would lift nearly all pandemic-related restrictions on businesses, ease mask mandates for the vaccinated, and plans to end the state of emergency on June 15. These moves to reopen signal that the state is ready to move forward.
While we may be looking forward to a return to normalcy, we’re also conscious of the immense toll the pandemic has taken in the last fourteen months. Many have suffered the economic consequences of the pandemic, with the millions of workers out of jobs across the country. The state has had 660,513 COVID-19 cases since the start of the pandemic and there have been 17,842 confirmed deaths in Massachusetts, according to the state. No one has been untouched by the tragedy of the pandemic.
Each of the lives lost had a community of loved ones who will continue to mourn their loss even as we look hopefully toward a post-pandemic world. Boston.com wants to give readers a space to honor the memories of the people we’ve lost to the pandemic.
Is there someone you want to remember as we move forward? Let us know who this person was, what they meant to you, and share the stories you don’t want to be forgotten in the Boston.com survey below or e-mail [email protected], and we’ll feature your responses in a future article.
