‘Like the world’s least cooperative audiobook’: Late-night TV hosts took a crack at Robert Mueller’s testimony
The reaction from late-night TV hosts ran the gamut.
Former special counsel Robert S. Mueller III testified Wednesday in back-to-back congressional hearings regarding his report on Russian interference in the 2016 election.
Unsurprisingly, late-night TV hosts had jokes and opinions to share. On Wednesday night’s shows, they largely focused on Mueller’s demeanor during the hearings.
“Muller’s testimony was like watching depressed paint dry,” Full Frontal host Samantha Bee said.
They also narrowed in on his “pretty low-key” answers, but The Late Show’s Stephen Colbert also said those answers shouldn’t have surprised anyone.
“Just take a look at this old note he passed in school,” the host said as the screen showed a paper that read: “Will you go to prom with me? Check one.” The options were “Generally yes,” or, “I can’t accept that characterization.”
The largest revelation of the day wasn’t part of the testimony, at least according to Colbert. It was Mueller’s nickname: Bobby Three Sticks, which the host said he just learned about.
The Daily Show’s Trevor Noah quipped that the former special council was “like the world’s least cooperative audiobook.”
“Chapter one: you know what? You know how to read. Go get the book,” he grumbled, impersonating Mueller. “Read it yourself.”
The hosts also took on some of the congressmen who questioned Mueller.
Rep. Louie Gohmert (R-Texas) blasted Mueller on his friendship with former FBI director James Comey. Seth Meyers of Late Night thought the exchange got a little personal.
“Gohmert just might be jealous that, unlike him, people have friends,” he joked.
Adopting an Gohmert impersonation, he tweaked the fiery exchange.
“And this friend of yours, he’s someone you can have lunch with? Maybe catch a ball game?” Meyers asked in an exaggeration of Gohmert’s drawl. “And when you’re going through a rough patch in your personal life, he’s there to lend an ear? Maybe your family and his family take a vacation every once in a — well that must be very nice for you.”

Many of the hosts also turned their criticism onto the American public for not reading Mueller’s report in the first place.
“We don’t need to force the world’s grumpiest law daddy to read between the lines of his report when you could just read the lines,” Bee said.
