B.J. Novak and Mindy Kaling are ‘like family’
“The truth is that B.J. is so much more like family now than a platonic friend."
OK, so they’re not a couple, but B.J. Novak and Mindy Kaling are closer than ever, it seems.
And no, Newton native Novak is not the father of Kaling’s baby daughter, Katherine — but he is the godfather.
“The truth is that B.J. is so much more like family now than a platonic friend,’’ Kaling told Good Housekeeping in a recent interview. “He’s the godfather to my daughter.’’
Novak sounds like a very involved godfather, by all accounts.
“He comes over like once a week. Sometimes he’ll come over just to hang out with her,’’ Kaling said.
The pair worked as writers and stars on the NBC mega-hit “The Office,’’ where they played an on-again, off-again couple on camera. Off screen, they have publicly kept a close friendship, even after the show’s sunset.
The relationship wasn’t always so platonic though. Back in the early 2000s Kaling and Novak were romantically involved. In an interview with Howard Stern back in 2014, the Cambridge native admitted that Novak broke her heart.
The pair have even gone to the iconic Met Gala together; this year’s soiree is Monday night. Kaling teased her outfit — something shiny and gold — in a quick video she posted to her Instagram story Saturday, but no word on who, if anyone, she’ll bring as her date.
Well, the relationship Kaling once called “complicated’’ seems stronger than ever — albeit not romantically.
