Mindy Kaling’s watching a ton of teen TV. She has some thoughts
Maybe it takes a binge to make a binge. A binge-worthy TV show, that is. In any case, Mindy Kaling has been watching a bunch of teen television while working on her coming-of-age comedy for Netflix. She’s not complaining.
“As a teenager, my parents never allowed me to watch all those teen drama soap operas my friends loved because they thought they were too inappropriate,’’ Kaling wrote on Instagram. “So I’ve had to catch up on all the classics as an adult!’’
Now that she’s finally seen all the shows her friends were watching without her (OK, a couple of the show are fairly new and still airing), Kaling has some favorites.
“Friday Night Lights’’ — “Perhaps one of the GOATs?!’’ Kaling wrote.
“Riverdale’’ — Kaling called the CW drama a “beautiful show’’ with “unrealistically attractive [people].’’ The cinematography reminds her of “Twin Peaks.’’
“Veronica Mars’’ — Kaling loves mysteries, especially those that center on women. “Kristen Bell is incomparable as Veronica Mars,’’ she said on her story.
“The O.C.’’ — “Adam Brody changed my life,’’ she wrote. Kaling said a crush on Brody once prompted her to make her e-mail password “Seth Cohen’’ after his character, and the show made her love Los Angeles long before she ever moved there.
“Fresh Off the Boat’’ — Normally, Kaling said, she doesn’t care for shows with teens that “focus too much attention on the parents’’ but “Fresh Off the Boat’’ is an exception. “Constance Wu is so hilarious,’’ she said on her story. JENNI TODD
