Damon missed an awards show due to a family emergency in Boston
was set to accept the Stanley Kubrick Award for Excellence in Film at the Britannia Awards in Los Angeles on Friday.
When it came time for the actor to receive the honor, however, actress Kate Mara took the stage. She revealed that Damon had to travel to Boston because of a family emergency.
“As much as we wish he was here with us, we know family comes first,” she said.
A recorded message from Damon — which begins at the 34:45 mark in the video here — followed.
“I found out about this award six months ago, and I was just so incredibly honored to receive it. And I was really looking forward to tonight,” Damon said. “I’m really sorry not to be with you tonight. Thank you for this wonderful honor.”
The Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award is “presented to a unique individual, upon whose work is stamped the indelible mark of authorship and commitment, and who has lifted the craft to new heights,” according to a press release on the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) website. Previous recipients include George Clooney, Steven Spielberg, and Meryl Streep.
