On Sunday night, Emmys host Jimmy Kimmel reluctantly welcomed a surprise guest to share the stage.

Moments after John Oliver accepted the award for Outstanding Variety Talk Series for his HBO show, Last Week Tonight, Matt Damon appeared beside Kimmel to clarify what had just gone down.

“I missed the last category. Did you win?” Damon asked.

In keeping with the pair’s 10 years of on-air faux-feuding—during which Kimmel has refused to interview Damon, parodied his movie trailers, and accompanied him to couples therapy twice—Damon offered Kimmel some barbed condolences after discovering that ABC’s Jimmy Kimmel Live! had lost the award.

“This is so humiliating. I’m sorry,” Damon said. “I mean, you lost and now you’ve gotta stand out here for the rest of the night in front of everybody, when you probably just wanna go home and curl up and cry.”

Damon proceeded to call Kimmel a “big loser,” encouraging the audience to applaud Kimmel and giving him an awkwardly one-sided hug.

Just before Damon’s exit from the Emmys stage, he slipped in one last jab at his longstanding nemesis, referencing an earlier part of the show during which Kimmel handed out snacks his mom made to the audience: “Tell your mom I like them apples.”
