Man portrayed by Christian Bale in The Fighter charged with assault

Lowell-born boxer Richard “Dicky’’ Eklund, who was portrayed by Christian Bale in 2010’s The Fighter, was arrested Thursday after police say he assaulted a woman in Lowell.

Eklund is the half-brother of former light welterweight champion Micky Ward, who was played by Mark Wahlberg in the film. Bale won an Academy Award for his performance.

Eklund, 58, was charged with assault and battery on a family or household member, according to the Middlesex District Attorney’s office. Police say Eklund threw the woman to the ground, which resulted in bruising on her arm and chest.

Lowell District Court Judge Neil Hourihan set Eklund’s bail at $500 cash Friday, and ordered him not to contact the victim. Eklund’s next hearing is set for September 21.

Eklund’s most notable fight came against Sugar Ray Leonard in 1978 at the Hynes Memorial Auditorium in Boston. Eklund went the distance, but Leonard won by decision. His 10-year professional career included 19 wins and 10 losses before a drug addiction effectively ended it.

Eklund has 65 arrests on his record, and was featured in the 1995 HBO documentary High On Crack Street: Lost Lives in Lowell, according to The Lowell Sun.
