Johnny Trinh, the man Mark Wahlberg punched in the face and abused with racial slurs in 1988, told The Daily Mail that he would like to see Wahlberg be granted the pardon for which he applied last month.

“He should not have the crime hanging over him any longer,’’ Trinh said.

Wahlberg filed a petition to Massachusetts’ Board of Pardons on Nov. 26 seeking a pardon for the 1988 assault conviction in which he physically and verbally abused two Vietnamese men. Trinh, the second man Wahlberg assaulted during the incident, told The Daily Mail he had no idea his attacker had become a movie star until the recent interview. He also clarified that he was already blind in his left eye before Wahlberg hit him. Trinh lost his eye fighting in the Vietnam War in 1975.

Trinh also said that he wants to meet Wahlberg in person and let him know that he doesn’t hold a grudge:

‘He was young and reckless but I forgive him now. Everyone deserves another chance…He paid for his crime when he went to prison. I am not saying that it did not hurt when he punched me in the face, but it was a long time ago…He has grown up now. I am sure he has his own family and is a responsible man.’’
