Mickey Rooney has died of natural causes at 93

Just two months after the world said goodbye to Shirley Temple Black, her frequent costar, actor Mickey Rooney, died on Sunday. He was 93.

Los Angeles Police Commander Andrew Smith confirmed the news which was initially reported by TMZ just after 10:30 p.m. April 6.

Rooney, who was born Joe Yule, Jr. in 1920, was nominated for four Academy Awards in his liftetime, and became a household name after taking on the role of Andy Hardy in 20 films “Hardy Boys’’ films.

Rooney often shared the silver screen with Judy Garland, like in the scene below from the 1938 movie “Love Finds Andy Hardy.’’

[fragment number=1]After serving in World War II, Rooney returned to the film industry, later broadening his credits to the stage in plays such as “Sugar Babies,’’ which earned him a 1979 Tony nomination. He has hundreds of credits to his name on IMDB.

Rooney is survived by his eighth wife, Jan, and nine children, USA Today reports.
