Watch: Boston doctor drops to one knee, proposes to girlfriend before finishing the Marathon
Dr. Andrew Becker, an anesthesiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and member of the Mass General Marathon Team, had plenty to celebrate this Marathon Monday.
For athletes and spectators alike, there is no shortage of emotions when it comes to the Boston Marathon. Especially in that final stretch.
From exhausted, but happy leaps to extra support from fellow runners, emotions often reach a peak as athletes near the Back Bay finish line.
And though crossing the finish line is the focus for many athletes, at least one local doctor had even more cause for celebration: a successful marriage proposal.
As he was nearing the final leg of the race, Dr. Andrew Becker, an anesthesiologist at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and member of the Mass General Marathon Team, stopped to drop down on one knee and propose to his girlfriend, who was proudly cheering him on along the route.
Julia Frederick, chief of staff at the Boston Public Health Commission and a lifelong Bostonian, said “yes” to Becker on Patriots Day, her favorite day of the year, according to a spokesperson for Mass General Brigham.
Becker, who went on to finish the Marathon after enjoying the moment with his now fiancé, even wore a custom running shirt as part of the proposal.
