Bostonians love Robert McCloskey’s Make Way for Ducklings so much that there’s an annual parade and sculpture in the Boston Public Garden dedicated to it. The author and illustrator died in 2003 at the age of 88, but today marks what would have been his 101st birthday, according to The Boston Globe.

The children’s book, published in 1941, tells the story of a family of ducklings who make the trip from the Charles River to the Public Garden. The ducklings make it to their new home with the help of some Boston Police officers. The inspiration for the Caldecott-winning book came from McCloskey’s experiences walking to art class in Boston.

McCloskey wrote and illustrated eight books through his career, and he illustrated 10 books for other authors as well, but Make Way for Ducklings will always be the favorite in Boston.
