‘Portraits of Service’ by Robert H. Miller and Andrew Wakeford
Helen Patton, granddaughter of World War II General George S. Patton, is the force behind “Portraits of Service: Looking into the Faces of Veterans’’ by Robert H. Miller and Andrew Wakeford (Patton Publishing). Each two-page spread of this coffee-table book features a close-up photograph of a veteran and a personal wartime story, like that of John Ciecko Jr. Born in a German concentration camp, he settled in America and served with the US Marines, losing both his legs to injuries he suffered on his final tour of duty. “I was just damn proud to be able to repay the United States for liberating my parents and me,’’ he said.
