Marty Walsh calls for submissions to Emerging Art Exhibition
Think you have what it takes to make it in Boston’s art scene? This may be your chance.The second annual Fay Chandler Emerging Art Exhibition is accepting submissions, Mayor Marty Walsh announced in a statement Monday. The free event, showcasing the Boston visual arts community and awarding $5,000 in prizes, is hosted by the mayor’s Office of Arts and Culture. It will display “fresh, original, and contemporary works of art” created by Boston-based artists. The deadline to apply is August 31, according to the statement. “If arts and culture are going to continue to thrive in Boston, it is important that we to continue to find ways to recognize and support the contributions of the artists who live and work here,” Walsh said in a statement. “The Fay Chandler Emerging Art Exhibition provides an opportunity to showcase the work of those artists who are starting out and I’m looking forward to seeing their work.”To be eligible, artists must be at least 18 years old; live, work, or create in Boston; not be represented by a gallery; and submit work made in the last three years, the Boston Art Commission said. The artwork will be judged by Boston art professionals and peers, and exhibited in the Scollay Square Garden at Boston City Hall in October.Artists will have the chance to win $2,500 for the Best in Show, $1,500 for the New Artist, and $1,000 for the Over 50 Artist. A reception will take place at City Hall on October 6, from 6 to 7 p.m., where the prizes will be awarded by the jury.Fay Chandler, the inspiration for the exhibit, was a Boston philanthropist and artist who began her career in her 30s. The mayor’s office said she was an advocate for the arts and serves as an influence for artists of all ages.
