Woody’s had a tough go of it lately.

His owner had to give him up last month after becoming too ill to care for him. And Woody’s left eye had to be surgically removed due to cataracts.

A 13-year-old Shih Tzu, Woody now resides at the Animal Rescue League of Boston’s South End shelter, but he’s looking for a “loving home where he can live out the rest of his golden years,’’ according to a recent Facebook post by the league.

Despite his struggles of late, Woody is still a “happy-go-lucky boy who loves walks and gentle attention,’’ according to the post.

“He’s a big staff favorite,’’ Ami Bowen, the league’s spokesperson, told Boston.com on Wednesday. “I know everyone is really pulling for him and hoping he finds a home soon.’’

Bowen said it can be harder to find homes for “senior animals,’’ like Woody.

However, as more information spreads about the benefits of these animals online and on social media, they’re becoming more popular pets.

“They make such greats pets,’’ said Bowen, who has adopted an older dog herself. “You already know their personality, their size, and they’re trained and tend to be calmer.’’

Interested in adopting Woody? Drop by the league’s South End shelter (open Tuesday-Sunday, 1-6:30 p.m.), or call the shelter at 617-426-9170.
