Where are the public restrooms in Boston?

From libraries and community centers, to firehouses and even some restaurants, here's where to find public restrooms across the city.

When you’ve gotta go, you’ve gotta go. But where do you go?

In Boston, the answer isn’t always obvious, but there are more options than you might think.

From public libraries and community centers to lesser-known spots like firehouses, hotels, and even some restaurants, restrooms exist across the city if you know where to look.

To make that search easier, the city’s Age Strong Commission created an interactive map of public restrooms by neighborhood — a recognition that access to safe, clean facilities is more than a convenience; it’s a public health necessity.

For some residents, it’s also a legal right. Under Mass. law (M.G.L. c. 270, § 26), people with Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, or another qualifying medical condition can request access to employee-only restrooms in certain retail establishments, provided specific criteria are met — including the lack of nearby public options and documentation from a physician.

Still, for many, finding a restroom can be a daily challenge — one that became especially visible during the pandemic.

“They are essential,” said Anna Fahey-Flynn, manager of the Boston Public Library Central Library. “During Covid, when we were closed and so many businesses were closed, I remember talking to this man who was peeing outside, and I’m like ‘What are you doing?’ And he’s like, ‘Where else am I going to go to the bathroom?’”

“What were those people all doing during Covid? They had no place to go because we had months where we didn’t let people in the building,” she added.

At the Central Library in Copley Square, restrooms are part of a broader mission to serve the public.

“It’s a place where people can come and be safe during the day. They don’t have to worry. They don’t have to watch their backs. Everything we do here is free.”

Beyond libraries, some of the city’s most reliable restrooms are hiding in plain sight.

Firehouses, for instance, serve as 24/7 resources – an “amazing fact” that pleasantly surprised Fahey-Flynn.

“When someone told me that, I went and asked one of my local fire station people, and they’re like, ‘Yep, we’re open 24 hours a day,’” Fahey-Flynn said.

Restaurants are also stepping up.

At Joe’s American Bar & Grill outside of Christopher Columbus Park in the North End, general manager Kevin Kelly said the restrooms are always open to the public, no purchase required.

“I think there’s even signage over by the playground area that directs people to our restroom, and guests are more than welcome to come in. They don’t have to purchase anything or dine with us or anything like that. They’re more than welcome to use the restroom,” Kelly said.

He’s not exactly sure when the policy began, but the reason behind offering them to the public is clear: “The thought process is to be kind, obviously,” he said.

Other public restroom options include Boston’s network of community centers, such as those run by Boston Centers for Youth & Families, as well as some police stations and municipal buildings, though availability can vary by location and time of day.

For Fahey-Flynn, the takeaway is simple: public restrooms are not a luxury — they’re essential infrastructure.
