For many, coffee is the most important meal of the day. Whether you’re going through a drive-thru to get a morning cup of joe or getting a coffee with dessert at night, the drink is essential to many people’s days.
There are all kinds of coffee drinks in the world: there’s a variety of Italian drinks popular in coffee shops, such as lattes, cappuccinos, macchiatos, and espresso; black coffee, hot or iced; and “regular coffee,” which is the Boston way of saying you want a coffee with cream and sugar.
If you’ve ever wondered what the go-to coffee beverage is in other parts of the world, a new study from Coffeeness has the answers. Analyzing “Google search volumes for various coffee types in multiple languages,” the study found that the most popular coffee drink in Massachusetts is a latte, which is made with espresso and steamed milk.
Four other New England states — Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Rhode Island — prefer espresso, while Connecticut prefers lattes, cappuccinos (espresso, steamed milk, and milk foam), and affogatos (espresso and ice cream).

The data also found that Boston’s coffee drink of choice is a macchiato, an espresso drink with a small amount of foamed milk.
This may come as a shock to die-hard regular fans, but the drink’s popularity in the city could probably be attributed to its presence at Dunkin’ and Starbucks.
But if there’s one thing Bostonians confidently know and love, it’s their coffee. That’s why we want to know: What’s your favorite coffee drink? Do you prefer the macchiato, a straight shot of espresso, or are you content with a regular from Dunkin’?
