We have some wicked fun info to share: the most loved and hated Boston slang terms.

WordTips recently released a list of the most loved and hated slang terms in America, which included a Boston-specific list.

In Boston, the five most loved slang terms are: wicked, frickin’, hosie, frappe, and supper, accordiing to the study. The five most hated Boston slang terms are: ripper, tonic, bubbler, bang a uey, and Masshole.

Boston has the fourth most loved regional slang in the nation (Hawaii is No. 1) and four Boston slang words made the top 10 nationwide lists for most loved and hated: Wicked ranked No. 2 and frickin’ ranked No. 4 for most loved (No. 1 is conniption from Texas) and ripper ranked No. 2 and tonic ranked No. 8 for most hated (No. 1 is slashie from Chicago).

To comprise the list, WordTips says it first researched a list of up to 50 slang terms for the following 14 places with the most distinct dialects: Boston, Hawaii, New York, Philadelphia, New Orleans, Texas, Chicago, Denver, California, New Jersey, Mississippi, Seattle, Midwestern, and Pittsburgh. The terms, gleaned from trustworthy local publications, were then ranked according to the number of upvotes and downvotes each had on Urban Dictionary.
