Sullivan’s Castle Island is open for the 2024 season. What are you ordering?

Those hot dogs and raspberry lime rickeys are back on Castle Island.

Signs of spring are in the air. The days of freezing temps are (mostly) gone, we’ve said goodbye to 4 p.m. sunsets, and Sullivan’s Castle Island is serving hot dogs and fries for its 73rd season.

The South Boston landmark announced its reopening for the 2024 season on Facebook with a video of employees unloading boxes of hot dogs from a truck. It had been closed since early December, when the shack normally shuts its doors for winter. 

“The hot dogs have arrived! IT’S ALMOST TIME! See you all on March 2,” the caption read.

Opening day wasn’t the ideal example of a spring day, with people braving a dreary, 40-degree day in puffer coats, according to reports. But the concession stand’s assistant general manager told The Boston Globe it was their best opening day in quite some time. 

“It finally feels kind of normal,” William Cummings told the Globe.

Also called Sully’s, the restaurant has been attracting locals, tourists, and plenty of seagulls to the waterfront for a menu full of comfort foods — not only $3.15 hot dogs, but some of the least expensive lobster rolls you can find, french fries, their popular raspberry lime rickey, and ice cream to end the meal.

There are, of course, the other Sullivan’s locations at Hub Hall and Hanover open year-round. But some consider taking the family each year to the seasonal Castle Island location, which only offers outdoor picnic benches for seating, a “rite of passage.”
