Boston and surrounding towns have made moves in recent years to make the roads friendlier to cyclists, and the work is paying off.

According to a new study from Clever, a real estate data company, Boston is one of the most bike-friendly cities in the country.

We ranked number eight on a list of 15 most bike-friendly cities, with a bikeability score of 69 out of 100 is based on factors like the percent of workers commuting to work by bicycle, our bike share program, and how easy it is to navigate by bike.

Just 1% of workers in Boston commute by bicycle, according to the study, but that compares to an average of 0.5% in most cities. For those that are regularly cycling around the city, there are more good days to do so than bad. Clever counted an average of four days a year when the air quality was too unhealthy to ride and 128 of precipitation.

We asked Boston.com readers last year if they would support modifying the roads to make more room for designated bike and/or bus lanes, and 49% of the more than 400 people who voted in our poll said they would welcome those changes

“I totally support changing two-way streets with parking to one-way streets with dedicated bike and mobility lanes or outdoor space instead. Less cars on our streets, more people instead,” said Jason from Jamaica Plain.
